Drawing well is the cornerstone of art. It requires instruction, practice, and discipline. However, the artist’s best tool is not his pencil or paintbrush, but rather, a trained eye. If one wants to learn to draw realistic images of objects being observed, one needs to “learn to see.” The eye is the tool and one trains the eye by careful observation and drawing. Winston Churchill once said, “Give us the tools and we shall do the job”. I claim that without the tools it is very difficult, if not impossible, to do the job well. After accurately drawing the image, students will learn various techniques to add color to their drawings using watercolor, color pencil, and oil pastel.

This class continues to train students how to draw and paint what is seen, rather than what the student thinks he sees. Art lessons for children ages 5 – 11 necessarily requires much practice in learning to control drawing materials, so that the students learn to consistently create the various types of lines, dots, and circles that compose the drawing vocabulary. These lessons eventually help teach the children to create recognizable objects. Students learn to control line using dot-to-dot exercises, spatial relationship exercises, and directed drawing exercises.

About Us

I am a classically trained artist and teach skill-based, classical drawing and painting. I teach art for private, home schooled, and charter school students. Some of the charter schools I'm associated with are Sage Oak, Sky Mountain, Gorman, Granite Mountain, and others. Classical art is the type of art that was taught from the Renaissance until the 19th century to generations of young people. I strongly believe that classical, skill- based, visual art is very important in the overall education of our youth, and present-day research is beginning to confirm that belief.
